Training

– Induction training will be given to introduce the Candidate to the Quality Management System.

– However, the Candidate will be required to read and apply his/her Electronics skills, knowledge and experience in carrying out repairs on Laboratory

Equipment and this shall include fault diagnosis and resolution thereof on the following but not limited to, equipment:

  • Temperature/Humidity Chambers,
  • Ovens,
  • Incubators,
  • Furnaces,
  • Baths,
  • Thermostatic Controllers,
  • Dataloggers,
  • Software based applications

– Thus, the Candidate must be able to read and apply information contained in Service/Repair Manuals and wiring diagrams to conduct fault diagnosis and repairs.

– Support will be provided to the Candidate in the form of Documentation (Service and User Manuals), Database of information on repairs carried out on similar equipment, contact with the OEM, discussions and guidance.

– Thus, a candidate with strong electronic service, repair skills, training, knowledge and experience is required for this position.

Non-negotiable requirements:

  • Diploma or Degree: T4 or N6 (Light Current) – a must
  • Min 2 years’ experience in the Service and Repair Industry for scientific and general laboratory equipment.
  • With proven track record.
  • Excellent technical/electronic experience – Read, understand and apply your knowledge of Electronic circuit and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot on laboratory equipment across a diverse spectrum of instrumentation.
  • Reliable, punctual to and from work/customers.
  • Excellent Time management skills that will enhance your productivity.
  • Excellent communication skills – speaking, written.
  • Good team player, responsible and accountable for self
  • Excellent attention to detail – the department holds ISO 17025 accreditation for two calibration labs. Repeated errors will not be tolerated as this affects continued accreditation – the labs undergoes audits every year by external parties. Thus, paperwork such as but not limited to: job cards, calibration worksheets, technical records, etc.) must be accurate at all times – report fault findings fully and accurately for audit purposes.
  • Own Car and valid Driver’s Licence
  • South-African Citizen with Passport
  • Excellent attitude –cooperative, able to accept constructive criticism towards improvement

The following additional requirements will be given preference:

  • Savvy with electronics repairs; “think out of the box” problem solving skills. This requires the candidate to be able to troubleshoot on a fault and find the solution on his own by critical analysis and thinking. Note that the department has a wealth of information accumulated over the years, but there will be incidents where a fault hasn’t been noted before – this is where the technician’s skills will come to the fore to troubleshoot and resolve.
  • Calibration. MCL operates two calibration labs for temperature and viscosity calibrations. These are audited once every year and we get a team of at least 3 people that come to our labs over a period of 2 full days. The lab has a Quality Management System in place with rules and regulations for all work processes and these need to be adhered to without exception. After training period has concluded, the lab manager will be auditing the candidate on repeated errors and omissions and this will be included in the final grading system on whether the candidate is offered a permanent position.

Note where errors and omissions occur, training will be provided to correct these, however thereafter the expectation will be that said error and omission does not get repeated – the candidate will be audited on this.
