Far West Gold Recoveries (FWGR), part of DRD Gold Limited, has announced Engineering Learnership Opportunities for aspiring artisans from the Merafong community. The programme is designed to equip unemployed youth and technically minded individuals with industry-relevant skills while providing valuable exposure within the mining and engineering environment.

Engineering learnerships remain one of the most effective pathways into South Africa’s mining, manufacturing, and industrial sectors. About the DRD Gold Learnership Programme

The DRD Gold Engineering Learnership Programme aims to support skills development and create opportunities for individuals who are passionate about pursuing careers in artisan and engineering trades.

Learners will receive workplace exposure in real operational environments while gaining practical experience from qualified professionals within the mining industry.

The programme focuses on developing technical expertise, workplace readiness, safety awareness, problem-solving abilities, and trade-specific competencies required within modern industrial operations.

Engineering Learnership Disciplines Available

Applications are invited for the following engineering disciplines:

Fitting and Machining

Fitting and Machining learners will be trained in the assembly, maintenance, repair, and installation of industrial equipment and machinery used in mining operations.

Electrical

Electrical learners will gain exposure to electrical systems, fault-finding procedures, installations, maintenance practices, and safety standards applicable to industrial environments.

Fabrication

Fabrication learners will develop skills related to metalwork, structural fabrication, welding processes, and the manufacturing of engineering components.

Rigging

Rigging learners will be introduced to lifting operations, equipment handling, load movement procedures, and safety practices required for industrial and mining environments.

Minimum Requirements For DRD Gold Learnership Opportunities 2026: Apply for Engineering Learnerships in Merafong

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 qualification with a minimum pass mark of 40% in:
    • Pure Mathematics
    • Physical Science
    • English

OR

  • NCV Level 4 qualification

OR

  • P1 qualification or higher in an engineering-related discipline

Important Community Requirement

Please note that applications are only open to candidates residing within the Merafong community.

Applicants who do not reside within the Merafong area will unfortunately not be considered for the programme.
