Duties and responsibilities:

  • Receive samples from internal and external clients and organise them via their priority level with sample lists accompanying them.
  • Prepare high-quality petrographic products to project specifications and schedules using sectioning machinery and hand lapping.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment and infrastructure.
  • In cooperation with other laboratory staff, perform and maintain laboratory procedures, equipment calibration, documentation, and records in full compliance with the prescribed QA/QC program.
  • Work independently or as a team to complete assigned projects. Work is reviewed by senior laboratory staff or senior department staff and the Head of the Department (HOD).
  • Identify problems or potential issues and refer to senior staff and/or the Head of Department for assistance.
  • Assist senior staff in performing basic petrographic products.
  • Assist students with the use of departmental laboratories and equipment specifically rock cutting and thin sectioning machinery and hand lapping.
  • Assist in managing and the issuing of fieldwork equipment to students and staff members.
  • Perform ad-hoc tasks as prescribed by the Head of Department.
  • Perform various other duties, projects and activities as assigned by supervisor or manager within the physical constraints of the job.

Inherent requirements:

  • Grade 12 or National Vocational Certificate on NQF Level 4.
  • Minimum one (1) years’ experience in a material science laboratory preferably a geological laboratory.

Recommendations:

  • Bachelor’s degree on NQF Level 7 in Geology or related field.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
