The City of Cape Town’s Corporate Services Directorate is offering an exciting learnership opportunity in Road Traffic Law Enforcement to unemployed youth. This programme is designed to equip young individuals with the necessary skills, training, and practical experience to build a career in law enforcement, with a focus on Metro Police and Traffic Services.

The training will be facilitated by the Public Safety Training College, and learners will participate in a structured programme from 1 June 2025 until 30 November 2026. This 18-month learnership includes both theoretical education and practical law enforcement training. Learners will receive a stipend of R34.91 per hour for the duration of the programme.


Minimum Requirements for the 2025 Metro Police and Traffic Learnership

To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must possess a Grade 12 (Matric) qualification – certified proof required

  • Must be a permanent resident of Cape Town – proof of address required

  • Aged between 18 and 34 years old

  • Currently unemployed – includes students and EPWP participants

  • Proficient in English and at least one other official South African language

  • Must be physically and medically fit for strenuous physical training and assessments

  • Must have a valid driver’s license – Code B (manual transmission)

  • No criminal record

  • No visible tattoos when wearing any part of the uniform

  • Must demonstrate mental resilience, a positive attitude, and be able to work under pressure

  • Able to work effectively in team-based environments


Compulsory Fitness Assessment:

All shortlisted applicants must pass a series of physical fitness tests. These are elimination-based and must be completed in sequence. Failure to meet the criteria in any stage will result in disqualification from the selection process.

  • 2.4 km run:

    • Males: under 11 minutes

    • Females: under 13 minutes

Candidates should ensure they are in excellent health before participating in the physical assessments. Fitness and endurance are critical components of this law enforcement learnership.


Training Components:

Successful candidates will complete:

  • The Further Education and Training Certificate in Road Traffic Law Enforcement

  • The Law Enforcement Skills Programme (SP4/2012)

These certifications will prepare learners for potential employment within Metro Police, Traffic Services, or other areas of public safety and law enforcement.
