About the Role

We are currently seeking an experienced Shaft Fitter to join our engineering team, responsible for the maintenance, repairs, and inspection of winder systems and associated mechanical infrastructure. This role is critical to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of shaft systems used for transporting personnel, materials, and ore. The ideal candidate will have substantial hands-on experience working with Blair Multi-Rope (BMR) Winders, as well as Double and Single Drum Winders in an underground mining environment.

The Shaft Fitter will carry out planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance, participate in breakdown management, and support project-based work in line with engineering standards and legal compliance.


Minimum Requirements For The Gold Fields Group Shaft Fitter

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification

  • Recognised Trade Certificate as a Fitter

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience as a qualified Fitter, with at least 5 years’ dedicated experience on winder systems (BMR, Double and Single Drum Winders)

  • Must be medically fit for underground and surface operations as per Mine Health and Safety Act requirements

  • Must pass a Heat Tolerance Screening test and other job-specific assessments conducted by the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre


Key Competencies

  • Strong track record in mechanical safety compliance and risk management

  • In-depth knowledge of shaft-related mechanical systems and mining regulations

  • Familiar with legal inspection processes and standards

  • Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical faults and determine effective solutions

  • Sound understanding of condition monitoring tools and techniques

  • Proficient in maintaining and upgrading winder control and mechanical systems

  • Strong team collaboration and interpersonal communication skills

  • Familiarity with SAP or similar maintenance management systems

  • Excellent planning and time management abilities


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure the health and safety of self and team by complying with safety standards, operating procedures, and the Mine Health and Safety Act

  • Perform legal inspections and ensure that all equipment and installations are compliant with regulatory standards

  • Execute routine maintenance schedules, fault diagnosis, and root cause analysis on shaft and winder installations

  • Respond swiftly to equipment breakdowns and support rapid repairs to minimize downtime

  • Conduct repairs and overhauls on compressors, shaft control systems, station equipment, and winder-related infrastructure

  • Monitor mechanical performance of systems and keep accurate maintenance records and job logs

  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to ensure smooth execution of new installations or upgrades

  • Identify and requisition required spares and equipment, aligning with budgetary and operational needs

  • Participate in and contribute to the development of SOPs, standards, and compliance documentation

  • Be available for standby, overtime, and emergency callouts as operationally required
