RCL Foods is seeking a highly skilled and technically driven Maintenance Artisan to join our dynamic baking division in Durban. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and qualified artisan who thrives in a fast-paced food manufacturing environment. The role requires a balanced skill set in both mechanical and electrical maintenance, with a strong emphasis on minimizing downtime, ensuring preventative maintenance, and resolving equipment breakdowns efficiently.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of bakery production lines, contributing directly to our quality, safety, and performance standards.
Minimum Requirements
Education & Certification:
-
Trade Tested Artisan – Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
-
Wireman’s License (Highly Advantageous)
-
Valid South African Driver’s License
Experience:
-
3–5 years’ post-trade experience as a Maintenance Artisan
-
Previous experience in a bakery or food manufacturing environment is highly advantageous
Skills:
-
Excellent mechanical and electrical troubleshooting abilities
-
Proficient in reading technical drawings and maintenance checklists
-
Strong planning and organizational skills
-
Basic numeracy and computer literacy
-
Ability to communicate effectively in English

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
Key Responsibilities For The RCL Foods Mechanical and Electrical Maintenance Artisan

Perform daily equipment checks and record faults; escalate any abnormalities to the Maintenance Manager
-
Execute planned and preventative maintenance tasks to minimize unplanned downtime
-
Respond promptly to machine breakdowns, ensuring repairs are done safely and timeously
-
Conduct root cause analysis to reduce recurrence of equipment issues
-
Maintain all safety and food safety protocols, including lockout procedures
-
Oversee maintenance assistants during tasks and verify job completion standards

Carry out general building and facility maintenance tasks
-
Assist with planning and execution of maintenance projects, ensuring budget and timeline adherence
-
Manage and maintain toolboxes; ensure tool control is practiced after each job
-
Communicate regularly with production teams to identify and solve equipment-related issues

Participate in stock takes and identify spares or consumables that need reordering
