Position Overview

The Electrical Assistant will provide critical support to SARAO’s Electrical Technicians and Electricians in maintaining, installing, and upgrading electrical infrastructure. The role involves hands-on support for electrical lines, power systems, and related equipment across various SARAO facilities. The ideal candidate is technically inclined, physically fit, and eager to contribute to high-impact scientific infrastructure in South Africa.


Key Responsibilities For The NRF Linesman Assistant

  • Assist in inspection and maintenance of electrical infrastructure and power distribution systems

  • Support modifications and upgrades of existing electrical equipment

  • Aid in the installation of new electrical systems, including wiring and fittings

  • Help maintain electrical tools and safety equipment

  • Participate in trenching and pole planting for overhead line installation

  • Ensure adherence to electrical safety standards and protocols

  • Interpret and support work involving electrical schematics and technical drawings

  • Operate under supervision but be willing to take initiative when appropriate


Minimum Requirements

Education & Qualification:

  • Trade Test Certificate with 0–1 year of relevant experience
    OR

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with at least 3 years’ experience in electrical infrastructure maintenance

  • A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage


Technical Skills & Experience

  • Basic knowledge of electrical maintenance procedures

  • Familiarity with electrical health and safety regulations

  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings and wiring diagrams

  • Understanding of generator systems and electric motors

  • Experience in the use of hand tools, power tools, and safety equipment
