Job Overview

Are you passionate about environmental safety and industrial water treatment? We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Effluent Treatment Operator to join our operations team. In this role, you will play a crucial part in monitoring, controlling, and maintaining the effluent treatment process to ensure environmental compliance and operational efficiency.

This position involves working with PLC systems, coordinating with multiple disciplines, and maintaining the highest standards of Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) compliance. You’ll be responsible for plant inspections, sampling, sludge monitoring, and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to manage wastewater operations effectively.

Key Responsibilities For The AECI Engineering Learnership Programme 

• Monitor effluent treatment processes using PLC systems to ensure continuous plant efficiency.

• Report any abnormal conditions to the Operations Supervisor and escalate issues to relevant disciplines such as Fitters, Electricians, and Instrument Technicians.

• Collect and analyse samples, including customer composite retainer samples.

• Supervise and maintain sludge drying beds; manually remove and dispose of dried sludge into designated waste skips.

• Perform routine plant inspections and report abnormalities.

• Prepare work areas and issue safety clearances (normal, hot work, and confined space) as per required protocols.

• Conduct gas testing in confined spaces before issuing clearances.

• Coordinate with waste disposal service providers for sludge skip removal and replacement.

• Communicate with customers whose incoming wastewater falls outside agreed specifications.

• Ensure all SHE regulations are strictly followed at all times.

Qualifications and Experience

• Matric / Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science

• NQF Level 2 in Chemical Plant Operations (essential)

• Physically fit and capable of manual tasks

• Able to work shifts and overtime when needed

• Basic computer literacy
