Introduction

The eThekwini Municipality invites passionate and ambitious individuals to apply for the Artisan Development Programme 2025.

This initiative provides training opportunities for youth with a genuine interest in pursuing a technical career and qualifying as artisans in one of the identified trades. The programme is part of eThekwini’s ongoing commitment to skills development, youth empowerment, and economic inclusion across the city.

Successful candidates will participate in a comprehensive apprenticeship programme designed to combine theoretical training with practical experience, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for national trade certification.

The training will not exceed three years, depending on the trade.

Available Trades:

  • Millwright

  • Carpentry


Programme Overview

The Artisan Development Programme follows the structured requirements of the relevant SETA, QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations), and the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB).

Participants will:

  • Receive hands-on practical training within municipal facilities.

  • Attend a technical training institution for the theory component.

  • Undergo various assessments (verbal, written, and medical) during the selection and training process.

  • Be mentored by qualified artisans while gaining exposure to real-world municipal projects.

  • Complete all learning modules and assessments required for the final trade test.

At the conclusion of the programme, candidates will be eligible to complete a formal trade test to qualify as a fully recognized Artisan in their chosen trade.

Eligibility Requirements For Artisan Development Programme 2025

Applicants must meet the following minimum criteria to be considered:

  • N2 Certificate including the relevant trade theory subject; or

  • Technical / Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science, or Engineering Science, plus a related trade theory subject; or

  • N6 Certificate or National Technical Diploma (S or N Stream) directly related to the trade.

  • Must be a resident of eThekwini Municipality (proof of residence required).

  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid Identity Document (ID).

  • Applicants must be unemployed at the time of application.

  • Must have passion and interest in Millwright or Carpentry trades.

  • Age between 18 and 35 years.

  • Applicants must not have participated in any previous apprenticeship programme.

All applicants will be required to undergo pre-assessments as part of the recruitment process.


Key Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, apprentices will be able to:

  • Understand and apply trade-related theory and technical skills.

  • Operate tools and machinery safely and effectively.

  • Conduct maintenance, repair, and assembly of components in their respective trades.

  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic, discipline, and professional conduct.

  • Qualify as artisans after successfully completing the final trade test.
