Applicants are invited to apply for the ACTOM Apprenticeship Programme 2026 | No Experience Required
John Thompson, a division of ACTOM (Pty) Ltd and the largest manufacturer of industrial and utility boilers in South Africa, is offering a limited number of apprenticeship opportunities for 2026. This programme is aimed at young, motivated individuals who are interested in building a career in the engineering and fabrication industry, specifically within boilermaking and welding trades.
With a strong reputation in both local and international markets, John Thompson provides a structured environment where learners can gain practical skills, technical knowledge, and industry experience. This opportunity is particularly suited for school leavers and entry-level candidates who are eager to enter the engineering field but may not yet have formal work experience.
A maximum of 20 apprenticeship positions are available, and only candidates residing in the Western Cape will be considered for these roles.
The John Thompson Apprenticeship Programme is designed to develop skilled artisans through a combination of theoretical learning and hands-on practical training. The programme focuses on equipping candidates with the competencies required to work in high-demand trades such as boilermaking and welding.
The apprenticeship begins with a three-month evaluation period. During this phase, selected candidates will be employed as unskilled workers and will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment, work ethic, and ability to learn in a real industrial environment.
This evaluation period is a critical part of the selection process. Candidates who show strong potential, discipline, and a willingness to grow will be considered for formal apprenticeship contracts. Those who successfully transition into the apprenticeship programme will then continue with structured training that leads toward a recognized trade qualification.
The programme offers training in the following trades:
Boilermaking
Welding
These trades play a crucial role in the manufacturing and engineering sectors. Skilled boilermakers and welders are responsible for fabricating, assembling, and maintaining metal structures and equipment used in various industries, including power generation, mining, and heavy manufacturing.
All successful candidates will be based at the John Thompson Bellville Office in the Western Cape. This facility serves as a key operational hub for the company and provides access to modern equipment, experienced mentors, and a professional training environment.
Applicants must currently reside in the Western Cape, as relocation assistance is not specified for this programme.
To be eligible for the apprenticeship programme, candidates must meet at least one of the following academic requirements:
Candidates may apply if they have completed Grade 12 (Technical) with subjects such as Metal Work, Welders Theory, Technical Mathematics (Mathematics Literacy is not accepted), and Technical Science. This combination provides a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of engineering.
Alternatively, candidates who have completed Grade 12 (Academic) with Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) and Physical Science are also eligible. These subjects demonstrate the analytical and scientific skills required for technical training.
Applicants who have completed N2 Trade Theory subjects will also be considered. This includes subjects such as Platers Theory or Welders Theory, along with Mathematics, Engineering Science, and Platers Drawings. These qualifications indicate a more specialized focus on engineering trades.
Candidates with an NCV (National Certificate Vocational) Level 4 in Fabrication are eligible, provided that Mathematics Literacy was not part of their qualification.
In addition to academic requirements, candidates must be medically fit to perform duties related to the trades. The work environment may involve physical activity, working with heavy materials, and operating machinery, making physical fitness essential.
Applicants should also demonstrate a genuine interest in engineering, fabrication, and technical work. This passion is important for long-term success in the programme.
No prior work experience is required for this apprenticeship programme. All necessary training will be provided to successful candidates, making this an ideal entry point for individuals who are new to the industry.
The programme is structured to accommodate beginners while gradually introducing them to more complex tasks as their skills develop.
The selection process is designed to identify candidates who have the potential to succeed in a demanding technical environment.
Applicants will be required to undergo a psychometric assessment. This assessment evaluates various attributes such as problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and overall suitability for the role.
Candidates who pass the psychometric test will proceed to the next stage, which includes the three-month evaluation period. During this time, candidates will be observed and assessed based on their performance, attitude, and ability to adapt to the work environment.
Only those who meet the required standards during the evaluation period will be offered formal apprenticeship contracts.
Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35 years.
Only candidates residing in the Western Cape will be considered.
A maximum of 20 positions are available, making this a highly competitive opportunity.
Applicants must submit a CV that does not exceed four pages. The CV must include academic results and certified copies of all relevant certificates.
It is important to note that candidates with qualifications or experience in Electrical, Diesel, Fitting and Turning, Motor trades, ND qualifications, or those who are already qualified artisans will not be considered for this programme.
Interviews will take place at the John Thompson Bellville Office.
Any application submitted without the required certified documents will be disqualified.
