The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) invites passionate and driven individuals to apply for an Internship in Mechanical Engineering within its Landward Sciences Impact Area under the Defence and Security Cluster.
This exciting internship is based in Pretoria, South Africa, and aims to provide hands-on experience in research and development (R&D), contributing to innovative technologies that support national defence, safety, and advanced engineering projects.
 Key Responsibilities
As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you will work under the guidance of skilled engineers and researchers, gaining valuable industry experience through:

Performing finite element analysis (FEA) and multibody dynamics simulations to assess mechanical behavior.

Conducting literature reviews, summarizing findings, and assisting in report writing and documentation.

Assisting in the design, prototyping, and testing of systems related to blast protection, vehicle safety, and mobility.

Supporting test setups with data acquisition systems, sensors, and mechanical testing rigs.

Participating in field testing and impact analysis at the Detonics, Ballistics and Explosives Laboratory (DBEL).

Collaborating on rapid prototyping, working with electronic control systems, and contributing to operational tech demonstrations.
 Minimum Requirements For The CSIR Mechanical Engineering Intern

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering

Knowledge of rapid prototyping and workshop tools

Understanding of mechanical design principles, testing, and sensor technologies

Familiarity with high-speed data acquisition

Awareness of safety procedures in lab environments

Exposure to vehicle dynamics, structural analysis, or blast response modeling
