eThekwini Municipality 2025 Apprentice Program

Are you an unemployed youth living in Durban looking for artisan training opportunities? The Artisan Development Programme (ADP) by the eThekwini Municipality offers a structured, trade-specific apprenticeship programmedesigned to equip youth with the skills and qualifications needed to become qualified artisans.

About the Artisan Development Programme

The ADP provides workplace-based learning and training aligned with the standards set by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO), Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), and the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB). Successful applicants will complete a full apprenticeship, culminating in a Trade Test to become a certified artisan.

Minimum Entry Requirements

This opportunity is open to applicants for both Electrical and Millwright trades.

General Requirements (Applicable to All Trades):

  • Must be a South African citizen with a valid ID

  • Must reside within the eThekwini Municipality (Durban area) – proof of residence required

  • Aged between 18 and 35 years

  • Must be currently unemployed

  • Must not have previously participated in a similar apprenticeship or development programme

  • Should demonstrate commitment and passion for the chosen trade

Electrical Trade Requirements:

  • N6 Certificate including Electrical Trade Theory, or

  • Technical Matric/Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science or Engineering Science, and Electrical Trade Theory, or

  • A relevant National Technical Diploma (S or N stream)

Millwright Trade Requirements:

  • N6 Certificate in Mechanical Fitting or N2 Certificate in Millwright, or

  • Technical Matric/Grade 12 with Maths, Physical Science, and Millwright Trade Theory, or

  • A relevant National Technical Diploma (S or N stream)

Selection and Training Process

Applicants will undergo the following:

  • Verbal and written assessments

  • Medical evaluation

  • If selected, candidates will sign up for the full apprenticeship programme

  • Programme ends with a Trade Test – successful candidates will qualify as certified artisans
