Grain Field Chickens is a prominent player in South Africa’s integrated broiler industry. Based in the peaceful town of Reitz in the North Eastern Free State, we provide a professional and rewarding working environment in the countryside. We are currently seeking an experienced Assistant Artisan to support our qualified technicians in maintaining and repairing company vehicles.


Job Purpose:

The purpose of this role is to assist a qualified artisan in performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on company vehicles. The ideal candidate will work both independently and as part of a team to ensure optimal vehicle performance and uptime, following predefined work standards and safety protocols.


Minimum Requirements for the Grain Field Chickens Assistant Artisan

  • Educational Qualification: Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 equivalent.

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience as an Assistant Artisan.

  • Technical Knowledge: Sound understanding of medium to heavy haulage vehicle engines and components.

  • Licensing: Code 8 Driver’s License is required; Code 14 is advantageous.

  • Must be physically fit, self-driven, and capable of working under pressure without supervision.

  • Willingness to work long hours, including weekends when required.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with vehicle inspections, testing, and fault diagnosis.

  • Perform or support in repairing malfunctions using existing or replacement parts.

  • Conduct follow-up testing to confirm repairs are effective.

  • Complete routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, battery checks, lubrication, and inspections.

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repairs for compliance and invoicing purposes.

  • Identify potential mechanical problems during maintenance and escalate appropriately.

  • Perform component replacements, safety adjustments, and ensure all vehicle safety standards are met.

  • Support workshop activities during breakdowns and field service calls.

  • Adhere to all SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) protocols and company policies.

  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of equipment, tools, and work areas.

  • Knowledge of health and safety protocols, including PPE requirements.

  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.

  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Ability to remain productive and calm under pressure.

  • Reliable team player who can work independently when required.
