We are offering the 97582 – Occupational Certificate: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship), a comprehensive qualification designed to equip learners with the skills to operate as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic. This qualification focuses on diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing heavy equipment such as earthmoving and mining equipment, including engines, mechanical parts, and hydraulically or electrically powered systems.

Key Learning Outcomes for Heavy Equipment Mechanics:

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, learners will be proficient in:

  1. Performing preventative and scheduled maintenance on heavy equipment.
  2. Dismantling, assessing, repairing, and reassembling engine and powertrain system components in heavy equipment.
  3. Diagnosing and repairing faults in diesel engines and powertrain systems of heavy equipment.

Minimum Entry Requirements:

To qualify for this Heavy Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 9 pass with English Literacy, Mathematics, and Science, or equivalent qualifications such as:
    • N2 in Mathematics, Engineering Drawing/Industrial Electronics, Engineering Science, and Motor/Diesel Trade Theory
    • Level 3 NCV Certificate in Engineering and Related Design
    • Technical Grade 11 with Mathematics, Science, and English
    • Grade 12 with Mathematics, Science, and English
    • More than 4 years of working experience as an artisan aid, or Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Key Responsibilities & Apprenticeship Requirements:

  • Prior completion of Phase 2 (N2 Diesel Trade Theory), N2 Mathematics, Engineering Drawing/Industrial Electronics, and Engineering Science is required to progress to Phase 3 (N3 Diesel Trade Theory).
  • Complete the apprenticeship program in compliance with MERSETA learner/apprenticeship standards.
  • Successfully complete the apprenticeship in alignment with organizational Limited Duration Contract requirements.
  • Adhere to all agreed bursary requirements throughout the apprenticeship.
