Purpose of the Position

We are looking for a skilled Mechanical Artisan / Maintenance Fitter to join our engineering and maintenance team. The main purpose of this role is to ensure that all machines, equipment, and mechanical systems are maintained in excellent working condition for maximum production efficiency and minimum downtime.

You will be responsible for the mechanical maintenance, repairs, and reliability of machinery in the Roll, Serviette, and Ink Factories, ensuring that all equipment runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently. This role requires someone with strong technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and a proactive approach to preventative maintenance.


Key Responsibilities For The Apprentice Fitter and Turner in Gauteng 

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform continuous mechanical maintenance on production machines, plant equipment, and facilities to the required quality standards.

  • Plan and execute preventative maintenance schedules for all mechanical systems.

  • Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and perform effective troubleshooting to identify faults, hazards, or malfunctions.

  • Implement permanent corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence of issues.

  • Perform shutdown maintenance, ensuring all major repairs and replacements are completed efficiently.

  • Assist in machine changeovers including major parts such as embossers, folding cylinders, and mechanical assemblies.

Machinery and Equipment

  • Carry out centrifugal pump stripping, repair, and replacement including bearings, seals, and shaft machining.

  • Strip and repair gearboxes, replacing worn parts, bearings, and seals.

  • Conduct roll and multi-stage pump maintenance, including machining of sleeves and shafts.

  • Perform motor fitting and alignment, pulley and belt adjustments, and general mechanical fitting duties.

  • Ensure spares and components are available by maintaining accurate inventory and stock control.

Quality and Reliability

  • Ensure all maintenance work meets the highest standards of workmanship and safety.

  • Support the plant’s ISO quality systems and participate in continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Maintain proper documentation of maintenance activities and equipment condition.

  • Contribute to minimizing downtime, improving reliability, and extending asset lifespan.

General Duties

  • Provide technical input during new projects and installations.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient working environment at all times.

  • Be available for after-hours standby and emergency maintenance when required.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Grade 12 / N3 with Mathematics and Science.

  • Qualified Mechanical Fitter or Artisan with Trade Test certification.

  • Minimum of 3 years’ post-trade experience in a manufacturing or industrial maintenance environment.

  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems, pumps, gearboxes, and rotating equipment.

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical manuals.

  • Experience with preventative maintenance programs and plant reliability.

  • Knowledge of ISO standards, safety procedures, and general engineering practices.

  • Willingness to perform standby and overtime duties when necessary.

  • Sound understanding of hydraulics and pneumatics.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Strong problem-solving and fault-finding abilities.
