Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and hands-on Artisan Assistant to support our qualified mechanics and technicians in conducting maintenance and repair work on machinery and mechanical components. This is an ideal role for individuals with a strong interest in mechanical work who are eager to gain experience in a workshop or engineering environment. The position offers a valuable opportunity to learn from skilled artisans while contributing to a safe and efficient workplace.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

• Assist mechanics and technicians with moderate to complex repair and maintenance tasks on heavy machinery and components.

• Provide support in lifting, positioning, and moving parts and equipment (up to 20kg), or using slinging/lifting equipment for heavier items.

• Know and prepare appropriate tools and materials for the job, ensuring the lead mechanic or technician has what they need on hand.

• Clean and maintain tools, workshop areas, and machinery to ensure a safe and tidy work environment.

• Assist artisans with parts retrieval, verification, and preparation for ongoing repair work.

• Adhere to safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe and orderly working environment.

• Follow instructions from qualified personnel with care and attention to detail.

Minimum Requirements For The Barloworld Equipment Mechanical Assistant

• Grade 12 / Matric certificate

• Previous mechanical or workshop experience will be advantageous

• Ability and willingness to obtain a forklift operator certification within 90 days of appointment

• Ability and willingness to obtain an overhead/jib crane operator certification within 90 days of appointment

• Ability to physically handle tools and materials, and safely lift or position mechanical components

• Basic knowledge of tools and mechanical systems is beneficial

• Valid Code B driver’s license will be an added advantage

• Strong work ethic, punctuality, and eagerness to learn
