Role Purpose For Cleaner| Gauteng Department of Health

The primary purpose of this position is to maintain a clean, hygienic, and safe hospital environment by performing a wide range of cleaning and sanitation duties.

The Cleaner ensures that all designated areas—including offices, wards, waiting areas, and public spaces—are kept in a condition that meets strict health and safety regulations. This contributes directly to reducing the spread of infections and ensuring a comfortable environment for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Grade 10 to Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification
• At least one (1) year of proven cleaning experience
• Physically fit and capable of performing demanding manual tasks
• Mentally alert and able to work in a fast-paced environment
• Ability to lift and move heavy cleaning equipment and machinery
• Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals, tools, and supplies
• Good communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will perform a wide range of cleaning and hygiene-related duties, including:

General Cleaning and Maintenance

• Clean and sanitize offices, waiting areas, passages, and hospital wards
• Sweep, mop, and polish floors to maintain cleanliness and safety
• Dust and wipe furniture, walls, doors, frames, and surfaces
• Clean and maintain windows, lockers, and other fixtures

Restroom and Hygiene Maintenance

• Clean and disinfect toilets, basins, and sinks
• Ensure restrooms are well-stocked with necessary supplies
• Maintain high hygiene standards to prevent contamination

Waste Management

• Collect, remove, and dispose of waste bags safely
• Follow strict healthcare waste management protocols
• Handle general and hazardous waste according to policy

Outdoor Cleaning

• Maintain cleanliness in external areas surrounding the facility
• Ensure that entrances, walkways, and public spaces are clean and presentable

Equipment Handling

• Use cleaning machinery and equipment safely and effectively
• Ensure proper storage and maintenance of cleaning tools

Additional Duties

• Perform general housekeeping tasks as required
• Follow instructions from supervisors and management
• Assist in maintaining a safe and organised working environment

Inherent Job Requirements

• Work shifts, including night shifts, weekends, and public holidays

Compliance and Safety Requirements

• Adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety regulations (Act 5 of 1993)
• Follow hospital hygiene, infection control, and waste management policies
• Participate in medical surveillance as required
• Ensure safe handling and use of cleaning chemicals and equipment
