Introduction
The eThekwini Municipality is offering exciting training opportunities for individuals with a passion for pursuing a career as qualified artisans.
Applications are invited for the eThekwini Municipal Artisan Development Programme, which aims to develop skilled tradespeople through structured apprenticeship training in partnership with accredited training institutions and industry bodies.
This initiative supports the city’s commitment to skills development, youth empowerment, and employment creation in KwaZulu-Natal.
Apprenticeships are available in the following trades:

Mechanical Fitter
The apprenticeship will run for a period of up to three years, combining theoretical training at an accredited institution with practical on-site experience under the supervision of qualified artisans.
Programme Overview
Successful candidates will participate in a comprehensive apprenticeship aligned with the standards set by the relevant SETA, QCTO (Quality Council for Trades and Occupations), and the National Artisan Moderating Body (NAMB).
The programme will include:

Practical, hands-on experience in municipal workshops and facilities.

Attendance at a technical training centre to complete the theoretical component.

Continuous assessments, mentorship, and performance monitoring.

A final trade test examination to qualify as an Artisan in the chosen trade.

Eligibility Requirements For The eThekwini Municipality Apprentice Mechanical FitterÂ
To be considered for the programme, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

N2 Certificate including the relevant trade theory subject; or

Technical/Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science, or Engineering Science plus a relevant trade theory subject; or
-
N6 Certificate or National Technical Diploma (S or N stream) directly related to the trade.

Must be a resident of eThekwini Municipality (proof of residence required).

Must be a South African citizen with a valid Identity Document (ID).

Applicants must be unemployed at the time of application.

Must demonstrate passion and interest in the Mechanical Fitting or related trade.

Age between 18 and 35 years.
-
Must not have participated in any previous apprenticeship programme.
All shortlisted candidates will undergo pre-assessments as part of the recruitment process, which may include written, verbal, or medical evaluations.
Key Responsibilities During Training

Participate in on-the-job mechanical maintenance and fitting tasks.

Learn and apply the fundamentals of machinery assembly, repair, and operation.

Assist qualified artisans in daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and safety checks.

Complete assigned theoretical training modules and assessments.

Maintain a professional attitude, punctuality, and adherence to workplace safety.

Work effectively as part of a technical team in a structured municipal environment.
