Ilima Coal Company (Pty) Ltd is offering exciting Artisan Learnership opportunities for motivated individuals who are eager to begin a career in the mining and engineering industry. This programme is designed to provide learners with structured, hands-on training while working in a real mining environment.

Applications are invited for the following learnerships:

  • Electrician

  • Fitting and Machining

These learnerships are an excellent opportunity for candidates who want to gain a recognised trade qualification and practical experience in one of South Africa’s most critical industries.


Minimum Requirements For The Ilima Coal 2025 Artisan Learnerships

  • Applicants must have successfully completed N3 with the relevant trade subjects (Electrical or Fitting and Machining).

  • A strong interest in the mining industry and artisan trades will be beneficial.

  • Applicants must be willing to commit to a full two-year learnership agreement.


Learnership Agreement

Successful candidates will enter into a two-year learnership contract with Ilima Coal Company, starting on 26 September 2025. During this period, learners will receive both theoretical and practical training aligned with industry and trade requirements. Upon successful completion, learners will be well-positioned to qualify as skilled artisans in their chosen trade.


About Ilima Coal Company

Ilima Coal Mine, also known as Pembani Coal Carolina, is a large opencast and underground coal mine located near Carolina in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. It is owned and operated by the Pretorius Group of Companies (PGC).

The colliery is situated approximately 3 kilometres east of Carolina, immediately north of the R38. In 2016, PGC fully acquired Pembani Coal Carolina, strengthening its footprint in the South African coal mining sector.

Ilima Coal Mine holds a mining right over a significant area, which allows for extensive phased development. Both opencast and underground mining activities are being undertaken as part of a 30-year mine life plan, providing long-term employment and training opportunities in the region.
