Introduction

An exciting opportunity has opened for dedicated individuals to join our Student Phlebotomy Technician Learnership Programme. This structured 24-month programme combines theoretical study with practical workplace training in a medical pathology environment.

Upon successful completion of the programme and passing the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) board examination, learners will be able to register as qualified Phlebotomy Technicians, opening doors to careers in medical pathology laboratories and blood donation organisations.


What is a Phlebotomy Technician?

A Phlebotomy Technician is a healthcare professional trained to draw blood and collect specimens from patients or donors for medical testing and diagnostic purposes. This career is vital in supporting patient care, medical research, and healthcare services.


Minimum Requirements For The Lancet 2025 Technician Learnerships

Educational Requirements:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC) with the following subjects:

    • English (HL or FAL): Level 4 (50%–59%)

    • Life Sciences: Level 4 (50%–59%)

    • Mathematics: Level 3 (40%–49%) OR Mathematical Literacy: Level 4 (50%–59%)

Experience:

  • 0–1 year of relevant working experience (advantageous but not mandatory).

Additional Competencies:

  • Basic knowledge of phlebotomy procedures

  • Computer literacy (MS Office, data capturing systems)


Programme Details

During the 24-month training, learners will:

  • Attend formal training including lectures, practical sessions, and assignments.

  • Gain hands-on experience in specimen collection, including venous and capillary blood as well as non-blood samples.

  • Write the HPCSA Board Examination for Phlebotomy Technicians.

  • Implement safety and housekeeping procedures in line with legislation and organisational standards.

  • Develop strong customer care skills while interacting with patients and donors.


Key Responsibilities

  • Collect blood and non-blood specimens accurately and safely.

  • Ensure correct labelling and handling of samples.

  • Maintain professionalism and empathy when working with nervous or distressed patients.

  • Adhere to all safety, infection control, and quality assurance protocols.

  • Represent the organisation with professionalism and customer-focused care.

  • Learners are responsible for their own accommodation, transport, and food during the programme.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to complete a pre-assessment before selection.
