About the Apprenticeship Programme

The Motus Retail Apprenticeship Programme is a structured training pathway that combines practical workplace experience with formal technical learning, ensuring that learners develop both the skills and knowledge required to qualify as artisans.

Over a period of up to 3 years, apprentices will:

• Work in a fully operational workshop environment
• Learn directly from experienced, qualified technicians
• Participate in structured learning aligned with industry standards
• Complete all required merSETA requirements
• Progress through trade tests and level assessments

By the end of the programme, successful candidates will be equipped with the competencies required to work independently as a qualified motor mechanic.

Programme Objectives

The main goal of this apprenticeship is to:

• Develop technical expertise in vehicle diagnostics, repair, and maintenance
• Build a strong understanding of both petrol and diesel engine systems
• Prepare learners for successful completion of trade certification

Key Responsibilities For Nationwide Automotive Apprenticeships 2026

As an apprentice, you will be expected to actively participate in all workshop activities while learning on the job. Your responsibilities will include:

Technical Support & Repairs

• Assist qualified technicians with diagnosing vehicle faults
• Support repairs on engines, transmissions, braking systems, and electrical components
• Perform routine maintenance such as oil changes, tyre checks, and servicing
• Learn how to use diagnostic tools and workshop equipment effectively

Learning & Development

• Attend all required training sessions and workshops
• Complete logbooks and training documentation accurately
• Prepare for and complete all trade tests and assessments
• Continuously build knowledge of automotive systems and technologies

Workshop Operations

• Maintain cleanliness and organization within the workshop
• Ensure tools and equipment are used correctly and stored safely
• Follow all safety procedures and workshop regulations
• Assist with stock handling and parts management when required

Compliance & Safety

• Adhere to all workplace safety standards and policies
• Follow instructions from supervisors and senior technicians
• Ensure all work meets quality and manufacturer standards

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this apprenticeship, candidates must meet the following:

Educational Requirements

• Grade 10 with:
  • Pure Mathematics or Technical Mathematics
  • Physical Science

AND

• Completed N2 qualification or higher (including Motor Theory)

OR

• NCV Level 4 (with Pure Mathematics)

Additional Requirements

• Must be a South African citizen
• Valid driver’s license or willingness to obtain one

For Diesel Apprenticeships:

• N2 qualification must include Diesel Theory
