About the Role
A career-defining opportunity has opened at Metals Vanderbijlpark for a skilled Senior Mechanical Technician. This key role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, availability, and efficiency of plant assets by leading mechanical maintenance activities. The successful candidate will plan and supervise mechanical work, support continuous improvement efforts, and guide a team of artisans in a high-performance environment.
Key Responsibilities

Execute and control mechanical work in line with Asset Management strategy

Plan and schedule maintenance and repair work to reduce downtime and improve efficiency

Coordinate with production and planning to align maintenance schedules with operational needs

Allocate resources and tools for successful execution of work

Conduct quality inspections on mechanical repairs and installations

Build and manage strong relationships with suppliers and contractors

Monitor and ensure on-time, in-full completion of all maintenance tasks

Respond to equipment breakdowns and coordinate swift repairs
-
Lead structured root cause analyses (e.g. 5-Why) to prevent recurring failures

Interpret loss and waste data to identify improvement opportunities
-
Keep abreast of emerging mechanical technologies to drive innovation and avoid redundancy

Track performance and output of technical teams, applying corrective action where needed
Minimum Requirements
-
National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering
-
Minimum 5 years’ experience in mechanical maintenance, preferably in FMCG/manufacturing
-
At least 2 years’ experience in a leadership or supervisory role
-
Sound understanding of mechanical systems (boilers, compressors, cooling towers, lifting equipment)

Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)

Basic knowledge of effluent and water treatment systems

Strong understanding of the manufacturing process and maintenance principles
