We are looking for a skilled Fitter and Turner to execute workshop and plant activities for the manufacturing, modification, assembly, and maintenance of pilot plants, laboratory apparatus, and client products. This role requires expertise in machining, fitting, turning, and milling, as well as the ability to interpret engineering drawings and adhere to strict safety protocols.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities for the Mintek Artisan Fitter & Turner

1. Assembly, Fitting, Turning, and Milling

Manufacture, modify, and assemble pilot plants, laboratory apparatus, and client products according to detailed engineering drawings.

Repair and maintain mechanical equipment and components on machinery as required.

Provide technical support during commissioning of test facilities or client products.

Conduct quality control inspections, ensuring compliance with industry standards and machining close tolerances.

Test individual components and plant machinery following prescribed procedures to ensure proper functionality.

2. Engineering Drawings & Quality Assurance

Interpret engineering blueprints to determine machining and assembly requirements.

Assist the supervisor in QA/QC inspections and ensure adherence to workmanship standards.

Inspect subcontractor work for quality compliance when applicable.

3. Safety & Risk Management

Perform risk assessments (HIRA) before starting any assigned tasks.

Ensure the safety of trade workers and machine operators under supervision.

Comply with Mintek’s safety policies and promote best practices in workshop safety.

Recommend and implement improved work procedures to enhance safety and efficiency.

Assist the supervisor in safety inspections and compliance monitoring.

4. Workshop & Plant Execution

Set up and operate machining tools to manufacture components to quality standards.

Machine components based on engineering drawing specifications.

Precision marking and measurement using Vernier calipers, height gauges, and micrometers.

Perform machining, cutting, welding, drilling, and screw-cutting as required.

Operate lathe machines, milling machines, power saws, and handheld tools (e.g., drills, grinders).

Assemble structural and mechanical components according to specifications.

Desired Experience & Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Matric / N3 plus Trade Certificate as a Fitter and Turner.

Completed apprenticeship and trade test as a Fitter and Turner.

Proficiency in Lotus Notes, MS Office, and CAD software is advantageous.

Minimum Experience:

5+ years of experience as a Fitter and Turner.

At least 3 years of industry experience in a workshop, field, or project environment after qualification.
