The Maintenance Artisan Assistant is responsible for supporting the Maintenance Artisan in executing maintenance tasks safely, effectively, and in alignment with company procedures, maintenance schedules, and operational standards. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining mechanical and electrical equipment used in the factory — including pumps, fans, saws, lighting, and building infrastructure. The role also supports efforts to uphold health and safety regulations, meet quality standards, and maintain a clean and orderly work environment.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in executing preventive and corrective maintenance work as scheduled.

  • Complete and provide feedback on maintenance work orders and breakdown reports.

  • Perform basic mechanical repairs and servicing under supervision (e.g., pumps, valves, gearboxes, chains, belts).

  • Support root cause analysis and troubleshooting of equipment issues to improve machine uptime.

  • Maintain, inspect, and clean tools, components, and workstations to meet operational standards.

  • Conduct and record daily, weekly, and monthly machine checks, including generator and lubrication logs.

  • Support in reducing machine breakdown time by responding quickly during faults.

  • Follow standard operating procedures and implement safe work practices in all tasks.

  • Uphold 5S principles and ensure high standards of housekeeping and workplace hygiene.

  • Report any hazards, near misses, or incidents and participate in safety investigations when required.

  • Attain and maintain licenses/permits for specific duties, such as Working at Heights and Basic Rigging.

  • Identify and suggest opportunities for efficiency improvements within the maintenance function.


Preferred Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum Education: NQF Level 4 (Grade 12 / Matric)

  • Ideal Qualification: Electrical Level 1 Certificate (advantageous)

  • Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar maintenance support role.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical systems, including gearboxes, couplings, chains, pneumatics, hydraulics, and basic electrical systems.

  • Ability to work professionally and independently under pressure.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and able to maintain accurate maintenance records.

  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement.
