General Description
We are seeking a qualified and experienced Diesel Mechanic to join our maintenance team. This position involves the inspection, servicing, repair, and upkeep of a wide range of equipment including petrol, diesel, and electric forklifts, reach trucks, fleet vehicles, diesel generators, and tractors. The ideal candidate will have hands-on technical knowledge, a proactive work ethic, and the ability to perform both preventative and corrective maintenance.
Key Responsibilities for the Universal Paper and Plastic Apprentice Programme
Productivity & Maintenance Duties:

Conduct diagnostic tests and inspections to assess vehicle and equipment condition

Perform preventative maintenance to reduce downtime
-
Overhaul and repair major vehicle systems, subassemblies, components, and parts
-
Track time spent per repair job and compare against standard repair times
-
Maintain accurate service records and job logs
-
Ensure all shop tools and equipment are operational; schedule repairs and order supplies as needed
-
Clean, wash, and maintain vehicle appearance when required
-
Respond to emergency service calls and breakdowns
-
Coordinate with external vendors for outsourcing of specific repair jobs
-
Participate in ongoing technical training and knowledge development
-
Perform additional mechanical duties as assigned
Safety & Compliance:

Adhere to all company safety policies and protocols
-
Enforce proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
-
Maintain high standards of workplace housekeeping
-
Identify and report unsafe practices or hazards immediately
-
Promote a zero-injury safety culture
-
Complete all safety documentation and incident reports as required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with petrol, diesel, and electric systems
-
Proficient in hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems
-
Understanding of vehicle design, mechanical systems, and technical schematics
-
Ability to conduct preventative maintenance and interpret fault codes
-
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic capabilities
-
Excellent time management and task prioritization skills
-
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Physical ability to lift, move, and work with heavy components
-
Effective verbal and written communication
-
Attention to detail and high level of organizational skill

Willingness to work flexible or irregular hours as needed
Minimum Qualifications

N2 qualification in a relevant trade field

Institutional (workshop-based) training is required

Valid driver’s license (if applicable for mobile response work)
