We are seeking a Mechanical Apprentice to join our team and work closely with the Mechanical Supervisor in maintaining mechanical assets and equipment. This includes a wide range of systems such as HVAC, bridges, pump stations, control panels, lifts, escalators, and building management systems (BMS). The role involves executing both planned and reactive maintenance, ensuring all maintenance-related activities are completed to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities of the V&A Waterfront Apprentice Program

Planned and Reactive Maintenance and Upgrades:

  • The Mechanical Apprentice will be responsible for conducting planned and preventative maintenance programs for the Mechanical department, ensuring that all equipment operates efficiently and effectively.

  • Manage the resolution of all call-outs related to mechanical breakdowns and ensure that all concerns are addressed promptly and professionally.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to manage mechanical breakdowns, issues, and complaints, ensuring that mechanical assets such as HVAC systems, bridges, pump stations, and lifts are functioning optimally.

  • Oversee the maintenance and replacement of various mechanical assets, including HVAC systems, control panels, escalators, and building management systems.

  • Actively monitor mechanical equipment through the Building Management System (BMS) to track performance and ensure timely interventions.

Fault Finding and Equipment Monitoring:

  • Conduct fault-finding on critical mechanical systems such as air-conditioning plants, seawater plants, district cooling systems, pump stations, bridges, lifts, and escalators.

  • Ensure that all systems are continuously operating to their full capacity, minimizing downtime and improving operational efficiency.

Financial and Budget Management:

  • Assist in obtaining quotes for specific mechanical tasks, ensuring adherence to the established budget for all maintenance activities.

Site-Walks, Inspections, and Quality Control:

  • Conduct daily site-walks and inspections of all mechanical plants to ensure proper maintenance and functionality.

  • Perform regular quality control checks, identifying any discrepancies or issues that may require further attention.

  • Identify and report safety hazards on-site to the manager, ensuring that the workplace remains a safe environment for all employees and contractors.

People and Stakeholder Management:

  • Support and manage service providers and contractors to ensure that all tasks are completed efficiently and according to industry standards.

  • Track and monitor the progress and quality of work from service providers, ensuring high-quality service delivery.

  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety standards, legal requirements, and risk management protocols across the team and stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with external service providers and suppliers to obtain competitive quotations, ensuring high-quality and cost-effective work.

  • Foster strong professional relationships with tenants to provide excellent customer service and communicate regular updates on maintenance progress.

Ad-Hoc Projects and Special Tasks:

  • Occasionally assist with ad-hoc projects or special tasks as directed by the Mechanical Supervisor.

  • You may be required to work on weekends, public holidays, or during overtime hours as needed to meet deadlines or respond to emergency situations.

  • A high level of physical fitness is essential for this role, as tasks may require working in physically demanding environments, including sewer pump stations.

Requirements for the Mechanical Apprentice Role:

  • Matric or equivalent qualification (essential).

  • Strong communication skills to liaise effectively with internal teams, external contractors, and tenants.

  • A strong desire to learn and develop your skills in mechanical maintenance.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Attention to detail and the ability to follow safety protocols.

  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and overtime when necessary.

  • Ability to work in physically demanding environments, including confined spaces such as sewer pump stations.
