Liebherr Engineering Apprenticeship Programme 2027
South Africa’s mining, construction and heavy-equipment industries depend on skilled artisans who can maintain increasingly sophisticated machinery. Today’s technicians aren’t working with mechanical systems alone modern earthmoving equipment combines diesel engines, hydraulics, electronics and high-voltage technology. For young people with a strong technical aptitude, entering a structured apprenticeship can provide a direct pathway from school or technical studies into one of these specialised careers.
Liebherr is inviting unemployed youth to apply for its Apprenticeship Programme 2027 in Springs, Gauteng. The four-year structured programme will develop apprentices across several technical fields, including earthmoving equipment, mechanics, automotive electrical systems and high-voltage electrical systems. Applicants can qualify with as little as Grade 11 or N2, provided they have the required Mathematics and Science subjects.
About Liebherr
Liebherr is a global manufacturer of construction and mining machinery, earthmoving equipment and other advanced industrial technologies.
Its equipment is widely used across demanding industries where reliability, safety and highly skilled technical support are essential.
For apprentices, exposure to heavy machinery provides an opportunity to develop specialised mechanical and electrical competencies within a professional engineering environment.
About the Liebherr Engineering Apprenticeship Programme 2027
The programme provides four years of structured apprenticeship training designed to develop participants into skilled technical professionals.
Apprentices will have the opportunity to combine technical learning with practical workplace exposure while developing the competencies required to work on sophisticated heavy equipment.
The programme is based in Springs, Gauteng.
Apprenticeship Fields Available
Training opportunities are available within the following areas:
- Earthmoving Equipment
- Mechanics
- Automotive Electrical
- High Voltage Electrical
These disciplines provide exposure to both traditional mechanical systems and the increasingly advanced electrical technologies found in modern heavy machinery.
Programme Overview
- Programme:Â Liebherr Apprenticeship Programme 2027
- Duration:Â 4 Years
- Location:Â Springs, Gauteng
- Target Group:Â Unemployed youth
- Closing Date:Â 31 August 2026
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have a minimum of:
Grade 11
OR
N2
Applicants must also have completed:
- Mathematics
- Physical Science or Engineering Science
Important: Mathematical Literacy
Applicants should note that Liebherr specifically requires Mathematics and not Mathematical Literacy.
Check your school or N2 results carefully before applying.
Who Should Apply?
This programme may be particularly suitable for young people who:
- Have a strong interest in machinery
- Enjoy practical and technical work
- Want to pursue an artisan career
- Have an interest in heavy equipment
- Enjoy diagnosing mechanical or electrical problems
- Want to develop specialised technical skills
- Are prepared to commit to a four-year training programme
What You Could Learn
Depending on the apprenticeship discipline, participants could gain exposure to areas such as:
- Heavy equipment maintenance
- Mechanical systems
- Earthmoving machinery
- Automotive electrical systems
- Electrical fault finding
- High-voltage systems
- Preventative maintenance
- Equipment diagnostics
- Workshop practices
- Occupational health and safety
The combination of mechanical and electrical knowledge is becoming increasingly important as heavy industrial machinery adopts more sophisticated electronic systems.
Why Consider a Heavy Equipment Apprenticeship?
Heavy-equipment technicians work with some of the most complex machinery used in mining, construction and large industrial operations.
An apprenticeship provides the opportunity to develop skills that can eventually support careers across:
- Mining
- Construction
- Earthmoving
- Heavy equipment maintenance
- Industrial engineering
- Equipment dealerships
- Field service operations
The four-year structure also provides significantly more technical development than a short-term workplace programme.
Thabang Maimela’s Tip
Don’t overlook this opportunity simply because you only have Grade 11. Liebherr explicitly lists Grade 11 or N2 as the minimum qualification, making this particularly accessible to young people who haven’t completed Matric but have the required technical subjects. However, check your results before applying: Mathematical Literacy does not meet the stated requirement. If you have N2 Engineering Science, Mathematics or other technical subjects, list each one clearly on your CV.
How to Apply
Applicants who meet the requirements should prepare an updated CV and submit their application via email.
Application Email: norman.kryney@liebherr.com
When preparing your application, it would be useful to include:
- Updated CV
- Grade 11 results or certificate, where applicable
- N2 certificate, where applicable
- Relevant technical qualifications or certificates
- Copy of ID
- Any relevant practical or workshop experience
Closing Date
Applications must be submitted by:
