Applicants are invited to apply for Learnership Opportunity (W&RSETA Funded)
Are you currently unemployed and looking for an opportunity to gain valuable work experience while earning a recognised qualification? A Retail Learnership Programme funded by W&RSETA (Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority) is now open, offering young South Africans the chance to build a strong foundation in the retail industry.
This programme is specifically designed for individuals who want to develop practical skills in customer service, retail operations, merchandising, and sales, while gaining hands-on experience in a real working environment. If you are motivated, eager to learn, and ready to enter the workforce, this learnership provides a structured pathway into one of South Africa’s largest employment sectors.
Retail remains one of the most accessible and diverse career paths in the country, offering opportunities for growth, stability, and long-term career development. By completing this learnership, you will significantly improve your chances of securing permanent employment in retail, whether as a sales assistant, cashier, store associate, or even progressing into supervisory roles over time.
A learnership is a work-based learning programme that combines theoretical training with practical workplace experience. This specific programme is aligned with W&RSETA standards, ensuring that all learning outcomes meet nationally recognised requirements.
Participants in this programme will gain exposure to real retail environments, learning how stores operate on a daily basis while developing essential workplace skills. The learnership also includes structured classroom training sessions facilitated by an accredited training provider, where learners will cover key topics such as customer service, retail operations, communication, and workplace professionalism.
At the end of the programme, learners will have completed a Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), which demonstrates their competency and learning progress. This is a critical component of the qualification and plays a key role in certification.
This retail learnership is designed to equip you with both foundational knowledge and practical skills required in the retail industry. Throughout the programme, you will develop competencies in the following areas:
Customer service and communication skills, enabling you to interact confidently and professionally with customers from diverse backgrounds.
Retail operations, including how stores manage stock, pricing, promotions, and day-to-day activities.
Merchandising techniques, which involve organising and displaying products in a way that attracts customers and drives sales.
Basic financial and numeracy skills used in retail, including handling transactions and understanding pricing structures.
Workplace readiness, including time management, teamwork, problem-solving, and professionalism.
Health and safety practices within a retail environment, ensuring compliance with workplace regulations.
These skills are highly transferable and will benefit you across multiple industries, not just retail.
As a participant in the Retail Learnership Programme, you will be expected to actively contribute to both your learning and workplace responsibilities. This includes a combination of training participation and hands-on work experience.
You will attend all theoretical training sessions provided by the training provider. These sessions are essential for building your understanding of retail concepts and preparing you for assessments.
You will be required to complete all assessments, assignments, and learning activities as part of the programme. This includes compiling and maintaining your Portfolio of Evidence (PoE), which must meet W&RSETA standards.
In the workplace, you will assist customers by providing basic customer service. This may include helping customers find products, answering questions, and ensuring a positive shopping experience.
You will support merchandising activities such as unpacking stock, arranging products on shelves, and ensuring displays are neat, organised, and visually appealing.
You may assist with point-of-sale (POS) operations, including handling transactions and supporting checkout processes under supervision.
Maintaining store cleanliness and housekeeping standards will be part of your daily duties, ensuring that the retail environment remains safe, clean, and welcoming.
You will be expected to follow all company policies and procedures, including standard operating practices that ensure consistency and efficiency.
Compliance with health and safety regulations is essential, and you will need to ensure that all tasks are carried out safely and responsibly.
You will maintain accurate logbook entries to track your workplace experience. This logbook forms part of your PoE and must be kept up to date.
Professional behaviour is critical throughout the programme. This includes punctuality, consistent attendance, and a positive attitude toward learning and work responsibilities.
You will also engage regularly with supervisors, mentors, and facilitators, who will guide and support your development throughout the learnership.
