South Africa’s mining industry continues to evolve with advanced technology, automation and modern engineering systems creating new opportunities for skilled artisans. While many young people dream of becoming qualified tradespeople, gaining entry into an accredited apprenticeship or learnership remains one of the biggest hurdles. Mining companies are increasingly investing in structured artisan development programmes that equip learners with nationally recognised trade qualifications and valuable workplace experience.

The Ivanplats Artisan Learnerships 2026 offer aspiring artisans the opportunity to train at one of South Africa’s most exciting mining developments. Operated by Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, the programme provides practical and theoretical training across several engineering trades while preparing learners for careers in modern mechanised underground mining.

About Ivanplats

Ivanplats (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines, is developing a world-class palladium, rhodium, nickel, copper and gold mining project near Mokopane, Limpopo. The mine is designed as a state-of-the-art mechanised underground operation that will utilise some of the latest mining technologies, earning its reputation as a “mine of the future.”

Through its artisan development programmes, Ivanplats aims to build the next generation of highly skilled mining artisans.

Why Choose an Artisan Learnership?

Mining artisans remain among the most sought-after technical professionals in South Africa. Completing an artisan learnership allows learners to develop practical workplace skills while progressing towards a recognised trade qualification. Qualified artisans often enjoy strong long-term career prospects across mining, manufacturing, energy and heavy engineering industries.

The Ivanplats programme also provides exposure to one of the country’s most technologically advanced underground mining projects, giving learners valuable experience with modern mechanised mining systems.

Thabang Maimela’s Tip

Mining artisan programmes receive thousands of applications every year, especially for trades like Millwright, Diesel Mechanic and Fitter & Turner. Don’t wait until the closing date. Prepare your certified documents early, ensure your Mathematics and Physical Science marks are clearly visible, and tailor your CV towards engineering and technical work. A complete application submitted early often has a better chance than one rushed at the last minute.
