About the Transnet Trainee Assistant For disadvantaged youth 

The Trainee Assistant position is designed to provide practical operational training within Transnet’s locomotive shedding environment.

Successful candidates will assist the Shedman with locomotive shunting activities, locomotive preparation and safety procedures while completing both theoretical and practical training required to become a certified Shed Assistant.

This opportunity provides valuable exposure to railway operations and locomotive management while preparing employees for future career progression within Transnet.


Key Responsibilities

As a Trainee Assistant, you will assist with various operational duties, including:

Locomotive Operations

  • Assist with locomotive shunting movements
  • Prepare locomotives for train crews
  • Deliver locomotives for operational use
  • Position locomotives according to operational requirements
  • Assist maintenance personnel where required

Safety Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Identify unsafe conditions on locomotives, railway tracks and overhead equipment
  • Comply with railway operating procedures
  • Follow all safety legislation and Transnet operational policies
  • Assist in safeguarding parked locomotives

Coupling and Shunting Duties

  • Couple and uncouple locomotives
  • Connect air brake systems
  • Connect jumper cables
  • Operate railway points according to standard operating procedures
  • Assist with hand signalling during locomotive movements

Fueling Operations

  • Inspect locomotive fuel levels
  • Fuel diesel locomotives
  • Refill locomotive sand equipment where required

Housekeeping

  • Maintain a clean locomotive shedding area
  • Clean tools and operational equipment
  • Ensure good housekeeping after completing duties

Equipment Testing

  • Test auxiliary locomotive equipment
  • Report defects where necessary
  • Assist with operational inspections

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have either:

  • Grade 10 (Minimum qualification)

OR

  • Six (6) years’ experience within an operations environment

Training Requirements

Successful candidates must be willing to:

  • Complete both theoretical and practical Shed Assistant training
  • Successfully qualify to work independently as a Shed Assistant
  • Participate fully in all required operational training

Medical and Fitness Requirements

Because this is a railway safety-critical position, applicants must be willing to undergo:
